Stories from a long IT career

Anyone who has worked in IT for more than thirty years collects stories. About projects that ran exactly to plan (they do exist, I’ve seen one, it was a lovely morning), about nights when everything went quiet, and about that one integration nobody dared to touch, “because it works, doesn’t it?”.

An IBM System/36 terminal with a green screen, a keyboard and the manual next to it
Somewhere around 1986/1987: the IBM S/36, my first steps into the world of automation

This is where I share them: what I built, fixed and learned, where I’ve been, and the challenges I met along the way. Mostly about IT, because that is what most of my working life revolved around. Yes, including the meetings. Especially the meetings.

An 8-inch IBM Diskette 2D in a grey sleeve with a handwritten label
My first programs. Yes, on an 8" floppy! It didn’t fit in your pocket.

No names of colleagues or employers and no confidential details, because I’d like to keep being invited for drinks. It’s about what happened and what it taught me, not about who happened to be standing next to me. Soon you’ll be able to browse the stories by category or tag, share them with whoever you like and enlarge the images, in case you can’t believe the details. The first story is under construction, which in IT is practically delivered.

More soon, regards,Pim
